Breeding your own Worms

  1. Their Home - A Reln Worm Factory

Put an 8cm layer of bedding material (worm castings, compost of peat moss) on a layer of hessian material or several sheets of newspaper in the first working tray.

Add at least 1000 (250 gms) worms to the bedding material and cover with a wet hessian bag or newspaper.

Allow your worms a few days to settle in to their new home. Then add a handful of food scraps to the surface feeding area and replace the hessian or paper on top.

Place you 'Factory' in a cool dry area away from the hot sun.

  2. Their Food and Drink

Any food scraps (NOT meat though) or very small quanities of decomposting organic matter (eg. manures, grass clippins, leaves, etc). Variety is the key!

Watering is virtually unnecessary if you feed your worms mainly veggie scraps - which are about 80% in water content.

Regulate feeding to keep just ahead of the worms' rate of food consumption.

  3. Ongoing Management

Add a sprinkling of lime, wood ash or dolomite every few weeks.

When the top working tray is full (this takes about 4-6 months) take the bottom working tray and empty contents on your garden, returning the tray to the top.

Refer to the Worm Factory instruction Manual for more detailed instructions. This is included when you purchase the Reln Worm Factory. Also see the Worm Factory FAQ.
